With high gas prices, bikes are more common than ever. Yet, bikes are increasing valuable and, increasingly prey to thieves. Here is some interesting background:
• 53% of students will have their bike stolen during their four years at college. This is according to a 1994 study by Integrated Cycle Systems, of Bad Bones U-bar lock fame.
• Every year, over 1.5 million bicycles are stolen. The National Bike Registry reports, for example, that over half of property crime that occurs within the University of California campuses involves bicycle theft.
• The National Bike Registry records that bikes are most often stolen from the owner's home (versus other locations).
• On the other hand, many bikes are recovered. Yet, they still sit idle in the college security office or local police warehouse. Our asset labels and a simpler registration system help owners recover bikes and keep vandals at bay.
